The Grandmother Katsina (Hahai-i wu-uti) or Happy Mother shares with Crow Mother the title of Mother of all Katsinam. Her husband is said to be Eototo and her children are the monsters, the Nataskas. She appears during the Bean Dance (Powamuya), the Serpent Ceremony and at Home Going (Niman). She speaks in a high voice and is very talkative. Flat carvings of the Grandmother Katsina are given to Hopi infants. As a young girl matures, she receives larger, more detailed forms of the various Katsinam.
Steve Bahnimptewa is a contemporary Hopi carver from the Third Mesa (likely connected to Old Oraibi village), specializing in traditional and collector-style Kachina dolls. He is the son of the renowned Hopi artist Clifford (Cliff) Bahnimptewa (1938–1984), a self-taught painter and carver famous for watercolor depictions of over 286 Kachina dancers, featured in books like Dancing Kachinas: A Hopi Artist's Documentary (1971) and Kachinas: A Hopi Artist's Documentary (1973) by Barton Wright. Steve's siblings—Danny Lansa, Larson, and Roland Bahnimptewa—are also active Hopi artists, continuing the family legacy of authentic Kachina representation.
