The Hopi Morning Singer, known as Talavai (or Talaway) in the Hopi language, is a revered figure in Hopi Katsina (Kachina) tradition. Katsinas are supernatural beings central to Hopi spirituality, representing natural elements, ancestors, and moral guides. They appear in ceremonies to teach lessons, bring rain, and foster community harmony. The Morning Singer specifically embodies the dawn and renewal, symbolizing the start of a new day with songs that awaken the village and spread positive energy.
He carries a spruce bough (for purification) in one hand and a bell or rattle in the other to punctuate his songs.
