Steve Jensen is a contemporary Navajo carver based in the Southwest U.S., part of a lineage of Native artisans producing Hopi-style Kachinas since the mid-20th century. His pieces are noted for their attention to ceremonial accuracy while incorporating Navajo woodworking finesse. Similar works by other Jensen family members (e.g., David Jensen, a Hopi-Navajo carver) suggest a shared family tradition in Kachina art. Jensen's dolls are often signed on the base with his name and clan symbols.
Blue Whipper, as recently as 2001 reappeared on 3rd Mesa in the Hopi town of Old Oraibi. The spirit figure has a similar appearance to the Hu Katsinas, except it has stepped bars instead of horns. All Hu Kachinas are powerful spiritual beings. They appear during Powamuya Ceremonies and initiation rites, usually in the month of February. They help initiate the Hopi children ages 10 to 15 and they are often accompanied by the uncles of the youths in the age range to become indoctrinated into the Katsina beliefs.
Due to the fragile nature of kachina dolls, we do not guarantee they will not break during shipping. We do our best to pack them well, but due to their fragile nature and even with the best packing, small pieces can break. If you are purchasing kachina dolls, please keep this in mind.
