Nez Perce beaded purses or bags are beautiful examples of traditional Native American Plateau region artistry from the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people. These items showcase intricate glass beadwork, often featuring floral motifs, geometric patterns, or symbolic designs like horses, eagles, butterflies, or clouds.
Beadwork became prominent in the early 19th century after European traders introduced colorful glass seed beads to the Plateau area (between the Cascades and Rockies). Nez Perce women excelled at flat-stitch beadwork on hide (like buckskin or brain-tanned leather), creating flat bags, pouches, and purses. These served practical purposes (holding personal items) and ceremonial ones, with designs sometimes reflecting nature, animals, or personal stories.
