Plateau Beaded Bags are traditional Native American handcrafted items originating from the Columbia River Plateau region (encompassing parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana). They are associated with tribes such as the Yakama (Yakima), Nez Perce, and others in the area.
These bags emerged in the 19th century after European traders introduced colorful glass beads (often called seed beads or trade beads). Native women eagerly adopted them for decorative purposes, transitioning from earlier materials and techniques to create vibrant, intricate designs.
