Hand Made from Animal Skin with Glass Seed Bead Beaded Design and the Word "Alaska" on the Side with an Eskimo Indian in the Boat Using a Wood Paddle
In Very Good Condition with Minor Wear as Pictured Typical of Early Age
A miniature model of a traditional Inuit (often historically called "Eskimo") or Yupik skin boat, typically a kayak (closed-deck hunting vessel) or sometimes an umiak (larger open skin boat). These are handmade tourist items from Alaska, often crafted with animal skin (like seal or walrus hide) stretched over a wooden frame, sometimes with added details like a tiny paddler figure, hunting tools (harpoons, paddles), or beaded/"Alaska" labels for the souvenir market.
These models represent real traditional watercraft used by Indigenous peoples of Arctic Alaska for hunting seals, walrus, and whales. The skin covering provides waterproofing and flexibility in icy waters. Many vintage or antique versions (from the early to mid-20th century) were sold as keepsakes to tourists visiting Alaska.
