Shalako Kachinas originate from Zuni Pueblo mythology but are popular in Hopi carvings.  They depict towering, crane-like messengers of the gods, symbolizing rain, fertility, and the Zuni people's ancestral migrations.  These figures appear in the annual Shalako Ceremony (late November/early December), where they "bring prayers for rain" and bless homes for the coming year.  Dolls like this serve as both educational tools for children and collectible art.
