The Plateau Beaded Hide Bag Faces is the decorated front and back panels (or "faces") of traditional flat bags made by Native American tribes from the Columbia Plateau region, including groups like the Nez Perce, Yakama, Umatilla, and others in areas spanning parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. These bags, often called Plateau flat bags, beaded purses or pictorial beaded bags, became prominent from the mid-19th century onward after glass trade beads were introduced by European traders. Women artisans used them as personal accessories, purses, or decorative items rather than purely utilitarian storage (unlike earlier cornhusk bags). They are typically made from tanned hide (leather), with one or both sides ("faces") elaborately beaded using small glass seed beads in techniques like contour beading (radiating from a center for a shimmering effect) or flat stitch.
