Late 19th century
16.5" h x 14" h on side x 14" W
A magnificent early example of striking form. Twined basketry covered with pine pitch and with coiled rim finish. Two horsehair lugs.
The form is multi-purposed, allowing for a natural fulcrum keeping the jar tipped upright; but also allowing for a small hole to be dug to set the jar in keeping it stable. Additionally when slung, it carries more efficiently. Has slight separation of rim and typical pitch loss on surface. Overall in Very Good Condition.
