Avanyu (also spelled Awanyu or Avaynu) is a prominent deity in the mythology and art of the Pueblo peoples of the Southwestern United States, particularly among Tewa-speaking pueblos like San Ildefonso and Santa Clara.

Key Characteristics Form: Depicted as a plumed or horned serpent — a powerful, snake-like creature with feathers, horns, or a mane.

Role: Guardian of waterways, protector of the Pueblo people, and harbinger of storms and rain. It embodies the life-giving (and sometimes destructive) power of water.

Symbolism: Represents rain, lightning, thunderstorms, clouds, and the importance of water in the arid Southwest. It is often shown with a lightning bolt coming from its mouth or body, symbolizing storms that bring moisture to the land.
