In Very Good Condition

Desideria Montoya Sanchez (1889–1982) was a master potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo (Po-woh-ge-oweenge) in New Mexico. She belonged to a renowned family of potters and was the sister of the legendary Maria Martinez.

She learned traditional pottery-making techniques early in life and became known for her high-quality black-on-black ware, a style popularized by her sister Maria and brother-in-law Julian Martinez. Desideria often collaborated with her husband, Donicio Sanchez, who painted many of her pieces. Her work features elegant forms, precise burnishing, and distinctive designs such as feather motifs, geometric patterns, bear claws, and eagle feathers.
