Ivonne Olivas is the Niece of Juan Quezada and has learned personally from Juan the art of pottery making.
Iyonne Olivas (born in 1982) is a highly regarded potter from this community. She began creating pottery at age 13 and is known for her precise, delicate work—especially lace-like geometric patterns, fine lines, and balanced forms. Her pieces often appear in terracotta/red clay tones or polychrome (multi-color) with black, white, and turquoise accents. She has received awards, including recognition in the colored clay category at Mata Ortiz pottery competitions.
Mata Ortiz is a small village in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, less than 100 miles (160 km) from the US-Mexico Border. The community, population 2,000, is one of the designated localidades (localities) in the municipality Casas Grandes, one of several such pueblos in a wide, fertile valley long inhabited by indigenous people. Mata Ortiz is located at the base of a mountain known as El Indio and on the west bank of the Rio Palanganas, a tributary of the Rio Casas Grandes.
