Great Lakes Indian beaded bags are iconic examples of Native American artistry, particularly from the Woodland tribes of the Great Lakes region (such as the Ojibwe/Anishinaabe, Potawatomi, Menominee, Ho-Chunk/Winnebago, and related groups).
These are most commonly known as bandolier bags (or bandoleer bags), large shoulder pouches with wide, elaborately beaded straps worn diagonally across the chest. They originated in the mid-19th century, inspired by European military bandolier bags used for carrying ammunition, but Indigenous artisans transformed them into ornate, ceremonial, and decorative items.
