Plains Cree large beaded belts are stunning examples of traditional Indigenous beadwork from the Plains Cree people (also known as the Nêhiyawak or Prairie Cree), part of the broader Plains Indigenous cultures in what is now Canada and the northern United States.
These belts are typically wide (often 4–6+ inches across for "large" examples), elaborately decorated with glass seed beads in vibrant floral or geometric patterns. Floral designs became especially prominent in Cree beadwork after European contact introduced new materials and influences in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Earlier styles might feature more geometric motifs, while later ones often showcase intricate multicolored flowers on a light (white or pale) background, sometimes with dangling tabs, fringes, or drops for ceremonial use.
They were (and are) worn as part of traditional regalia, often for powwow dancing, ceremonies, or daily adornment in historical contexts. Beaded on leather, hide, or cloth backing, they sometimes include long drops or side panels for added visual impact during movement.
