Plains Sioux (Lakota/Dakota beaded pipe bags are iconic examples of Native American Plains Indian artistry, often from the late 19th to early 20th century. These bags, sometimes described with "Plateau" influences (due to stylistic overlaps or trade in beadwork between Plains and Plateau tribes like Nez Perce or Umatilla), were traditionally used to hold sacred ceremonial pipes (chanunpa) and tobacco. They symbolize spiritual importance, often called "containers for the heart" among the Lakota, as they hold items central to prayer and ceremony.
