The Hopi Squash Kachina, known as Patung (or Patüng) in the Hopi language, is a revered figure in Hopi Pueblo culture, representing the vital squash plant and serving as the chief katsina for the Pumpkin Clan.  These dolls, often carved as miniatures, are not mere toys but educational tools used to teach Hopi children—especially young girls and brides—about the katsinam (immortal spirits) that govern natural elements, bring rain, and ensure bountiful harvests.  Squash, alongside corn and beans, forms the cornerstone of traditional Hopi agriculture, symbolizing sustenance and fertility in their arid northeastern Arizona homeland.
