a particularly beautiful example.

Yei Bei Chai, also known as Yébîchai, is a crucial concept in Navajo culture, referring to the “maternal grandfather of the yei” or “Talking God” who often speaks on behalf of the other Holy People. He is one of the first four Holy People encountered by the Navajo, along with Growling God, Black God, and Water Sprinkler.

Yei Bei Chai is a powerful and benevolent being, associated with the forces of nature and the Navajo Creation Story. He is often invoked in the “Night Chant” or “Nightway” ceremony, a nine-night ceremony in which masked dancers personify the gods. This ceremony is a significant part of Navajo culture and is believed to bring healing and balance to the community.
