William Lucio is a Hopi-Zuni artist known for his skillful carving of Kachina dolls, a craft he learned under the mentorship of his uncle, Marlin Pinto, a celebrated Hopi clown carver.  Lucio’s work reflects a blend of Hopi and Zuni influences, rooted in his mixed heritage, and he has gained recognition for creating detailed, expressive dolls that honor the cultural traditions of both communities.  Based primarily in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, Lucio’s carvings often depict Katsinam—spiritual beings central to Hopi and Zuni cosmology—though his style leans heavily on the playful and satirical elements of clown Kachinas, a specialty he inherited from Pinto.

Carver William Lucio, apprenticed to his uncle, famed Hopi clown carver Marlin Pinto.  Black and white striped Koshare Clown, also known as the Hano Glutton, sitting with watermelon.  The clowns depict anti-social behavior and serve as lessons for the Hopi youth.
