Coolidge Roy Jr. (August 4, 1950 – December 2024) was a renowned Hopi Kachina carver from the Coyote clan, born in Moenkopi, Arizona, an extension of the Third Mesa villages. One of eleven children of Coolidge and Lucy Roy, he was a self-taught artist who continued the family tradition of Kachina carving, following in the footsteps of his father, Coolidge Roy Sr., and joined by his brothers and sons. Residing in Oraibi, Arizona, with his wife Juanita, he carved Kachina dolls for over 50 years, starting in 1969. His work, known for its animated poses, subtle "natural" coloration using faint pigments, and detailed miniatures, earned worldwide recognition and numerous awards. Coolidge’s carvings, particularly his Eagle Dancer Kachina dolls, are featured in books like Hopi Kachina Dolls and Their Carvers by Theda Bassman and The Hopi Approach to the Art of Kachina Doll Carving by Erik Bromberg. Deeply spiritual, he adhered to Hopi traditions, carefully selecting what to carve based on elders’ advice, reflecting his belief that “everything is spiritual and everything is religious.
