The Knife-Wing (also known as Knife-Wing God or Akaku, meaning "Knife-Feather") is a powerful supernatural figure in Zuni (A:shiwi) mythology, revered as a war deity, protector, and symbol of strength and transformation. Depicted with sharp, wing-like blades or feathers resembling knife edges extending from his arms and legs, a curved beak, large eyes, and often a headdress of macaw feathers, Knife-Wing embodies the duality of destruction and renewal—slashing away evil while bringing rain and fertility to the land. This motif originates from ancient Zuni oral traditions and appears in petroglyphs, altar paintings, and ceremonial contexts, where it serves as a guardian spirit invoked during rituals for protection against enemies or natural calamities. Unlike Kachinas, which are more anthropomorphic spirit messengers, Knife-Wing is a more abstract, avian-like entity tied to warrior societies and rain-making ceremonies, reflecting the Zuni's deep connection to the arid Southwest landscape.
