Knifewing, also spelled Knife Wing or A-tchi-a la-to-pa in Zuni, is a mythological Zuni deity described as a half-human, half-eagle sky being and the ultimate warrior. According to anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing, who lived with the Zuni from 1879–1884, Knifewing is characterized by:

Appearance: A human form with flint knife-feathered wings and tail, wearing a terraced cap symbolizing his cloud-dwelling place. His weapons include the Great Flint-Knife of War, the Bow of the Skies (rainbow), and the Arrow of Lightning.
Cultural Role: The hero of numerous Zuni folklore tales and a tutelary deity for several Zuni societies. His guardians are the Great Mountain Lion of the North and the Upper Regions. He is considered an original War God of the Zuni, though his depiction in jewelry is decorative, not religious.
Symbolism: Knifewing represents strength, protection, and martial prowess. Historically, his image could be tattooed on warriors before battle, emphasizing his role as a protector.
