Hand Coiled Clay with Bird Motif and Geometric Painted Design Signed Elizabeth Medina Zia on the Bottom
In Very Good Condition
Elizabeth Medina (b. 1956) is a respected Zia Pueblo potter, originally from Jemez Pueblo. She married Marcellus Medina of Zia and has worked in the traditional Zia style since the late 1970s, learning from her mother-in-law Sofia Medina.
She and her husband often collaborate: she typically forms, paints, and finishes the pots, while he helps with sanding and other steps. They use traditional methods—digging and preparing their own clay, hand-coiling, shaping, slipping (often with a white or buff background), painting with natural mineral pigments (black, red, etc.), and outdoor firing.
