The Man in the Maze is a sacred symbol of the Tohono O’odham (formerly called Papago) and Akimel O’odham (Pima) peoples, representing life’s journey, choices, and spiritual growth. It’s most commonly depicted in basketry, jewelry, and petroglyphs, featuring a human figure at the entrance of a labyrinth, navigating toward the center. The design, called I’itoi (pronounced EE-toy), embodies their creator deity, Elder Brother, who resides in a sacred cave below Baboquivari Peak, a spiritual site for the Tohono O’odham.
