Paiute and Washoe Coiled Basketry is very similar, both using the light colored willow, but for the black weft, the Washoe mostly use brackenfern root, and the Paiute, devils claw seed pod husk seen in this basket.

The Paiute encompass several related groups: Northern Paiute (Oregon, Nevada, California), Southern Paiute (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), and Owens Valley Paiute (California, near Mono Lake). All share a basketry tradition rooted in their semi-nomadic, desert-adapted lifestyle, using baskets for gathering, cooking, and ceremonies. Paiute basketry overlaps with Mono techniques due to cultural proximity—Owens Valley Paiute and Eastern Mono are especially intertwined—but varies by region and purpose. Antique Paiute baskets (circa 1880–1930) are prized for their durability and evolving artistry, often made for both tribal use and trade.
