Dolores Lewis was born in 1938 at Acoma Pueblo and is one of the daughters of the legendary Acoma potter Lucy M. Lewis. She learned the craft by observing her mother, using ancient techniques: gathering natural clay and pigments from the pueblo lands, hand-coiling the forms (no wheel), hand-painting intricate designs with yucca brushes, and firing outdoors in traditional dung or wood kilns. She often signed her work "Dolores Lewis" and continued her family's legacy of fine geometric patterns, fine-line hatching, and motifs inspired by ancestral Anasazi/Mimbres styles, including birds, deer, insects, and abstract geometrics.
