Corrine Garcia is a renowned potter from Acoma Pueblo (also known as Sky City) in New Mexico, born in 1960. She is the daughter of Fermin and Sarah Martinez and learned traditional pottery-making techniques from her grandmother (and mother). She began creating pottery in 1976 and has dedicated decades to the craft, often signing her work as "C. Garcia."
Her pottery follows ancient Acoma traditions: hand-coiled using locally gathered clay, mixed with ground shards from old pots for authenticity and strength. She prepares her own natural paints and fires pieces outdoors. Garcia specializes in corrugated storyteller bowls, where she pinches the clay to create symmetrical, textured patterns symbolizing water or rain. These bowls often feature small figurines of children and animals, inspired by natural cisterns (rock depressions) on the Acoma mesa that collect rainwater and attract wildlife and people during storms.
