Marie Zieu Chino (1907–1982) was a renowned Acoma Pueblo potter whose innovative work significantly contributed to the 20th-century revival of traditional Acoma pottery. Known for her mastery of thin-walled, lightweight vessels, she often incorporated intricate designs inspired by ancient Mimbres and Tularosa pottery, as well as Acoma-specific motifs like parrots, rainbows, rain, clouds, lightning, and fine-line snowflakes. Her black-on-white jars with Anasazi step designs and complex geometric patterns are particularly celebrated.

Chino’s pottery is distinguished by its use of fine local clay mixed with crushed potsherd temper, allowing for delicate construction. Her designs often combine life forms and abstract symbols, reflecting both tradition and innovation. As a matriarch of the Chino family, she taught her children and grandchildren, including notable potters Grace Chino, Rose Chino Garcia, and Carrie Chino Charlie, ensuring the continuation of Acoma pottery traditions. Her work is held in prestigious collections, including the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
