In Good Condition with Minor Rim Loss

The Tohono O’odham historically shifted from willow to soaptree yucca and bear grass as their primary materials due to environmental changes in the late 19th–early 20th century. Their classic style is:

  • Coiled construction using bear grass as the foundation
  • Peeled Yucca as the stitching material (light/cream color)
  • Unpeeled Yucca for medium brown
  • Devil’s claw (martynia pod) for the dark designs
  • Geometric motifs such as stepped patterns, stars, and black-on-white contrasts
  • Museum examples show exactly this combination: coiled yucca/bear grass baskets with dark martynia designs, often with stepped or star motifs.
