Antique Papago (Tohono O’odham) oval open baskets are traditional coiled baskets made by the Tohono O’odham people of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and northern Mexico (formerly called Papago). These baskets are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship, use of desert plant materials, and cultural significance. Oval open forms (unlidded, shallow to moderately deep trays or bowls) were practical for tasks like winnowing, serving, or storage, though many surviving examples were made for sale or trade.
