Traditionally created by the Northern and Southern Paiute peoples of the Great Basin, these baskets were central to a semi-nomadic lifestyle and used for gathering, cooking, and ceremonies.

The Southwest Pima (Akimel O’odham) people, originally from the Gila River area in Arizona, are renowned for their intricate basketry, with trays being their most common form. Winnowing trays from this region are typically associated with Great Basin tribes like the Northern Paiute, Shoshone, or Washoe.
