Walapai baskets, also known as Hualapai baskets (the preferred modern spelling for the tribe), are traditional woven baskets created by the Hualapai people, a Native American tribe indigenous to northwestern Arizona. The name "Walapai" is an older ethnological term derived from the Yuman language, meaning "people of the tall pines." These baskets are renowned for their intricate twining techniques and vibrant polychrome designs, often featuring geometric patterns in red, black, and natural tones created from locally gathered and dyed plant materials like devil's claw, yucca, and sumac.
