Apache burden baskets are traditional conical carrying baskets made by Western Apache peoples, historically used by women for gathering wild foods, firewood, crops, and other loads. They are typically twined or coiled from natural materials such as willow, cottonwood, mulberry, yucca, or sumac, often with devil’s claw for dark designs. Characteristic features include a leather rim wrap, dangling leather fringe/tassels, and tin cones or “jingles” that create sound—traditionally to deter snakes or signal presence. They also hold ceremonial importance and cultural symbolism around hospitality.
