The White Mountain Apache cradleboard, often referred to as a baby cradle or papoose carrier, is a traditional Native American baby carrier used by the White Mountain Apache Tribe of eastern Arizona. It’s a culturally significant item designed to carry and protect infants during the first few months of life, allowing mothers to remain mobile while working or traveling.
The cradleboard typically consists of a flat wooden board or a woven frame made from materials like willow, dogwood, or cattail fibers. The White Mountain Apache often use wood planks, sometimes padded with soft materials like moss, cattail down, or shredded juniper bark, which have antiseptic properties to promote healthy skin.
It includes a firm frame to support the infant’s spine, and a rounded hood or hoop over the head to provide shade or protection from the elements. Leather or cloth straps or buckskin laces secure the baby, and the cradleboard can be carried on the mother’s back using tumplines (straps around the forehead, chest, or shoulders) or hung from a tree or pole.
