The Arapaho (correctly spelled "Arapaho") people, a Plains Native American tribe, hold sacred ceremonial pipes as central to their spiritual traditions. The "peace pipe" is a common misnomer originating from European observers who saw pipes used in treaty signings; in reality, these are sacred pipes used for prayer, ceremonies, blessings, and communion with the Creator, not exclusively (or even primarily) for peace negotiations.
