Caddo pottery from the Arkansas–Texas–Louisiana–Oklahoma region (especially the Red River valley and adjacent areas) includes rare examples of jars and other vessels with amphibian/reptilian imagery, often lizards, salamanders, or similar “Beneath World” creatures. The prehistoric and early historic Caddo (ca. AD 800/900–1700s) were renowned for finely made ceramics—jars, bottles, bowls, and specialized forms—in both utilitarian and fine wares. Most decoration is geometric (incised, engraved, brushed, punctated, trailed, neck-banded, or appliquéd), but zoomorphic elements appear as a minority tradition.
