Flippin is in Marion County in the northern Ozarks region, right where the White River flows through (near Bull Shoals Lake today, but the river has long been a hotspot for prehistoric activity). The White River drainage has been a rich area for Native American artifacts for thousands of years, with sites from Paleoindian through Mississippian periods, including bluff shelters, camps, and villages along its banks and tributaries.
Greene County, MD, is in the far western part of the state. Southwestern Maryland's geology features Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, which can contain abundant marine fossilized shells like brachiopods, crinoids, corals, and mollusks. These are true fossils, not Miocene marine deposits like those famous in southern Maryland's Calvert Cliffs.
