The Atsugewi, also known as the Hat Creek Indians, are a Native American tribe historically inhabiting the northeastern California region around Hat Creek, Burney Creek, and Horse Creek (Dixie Valley), which drain into the Pit River. Part of the larger Pit River peoples, they speak the Atsugewi language (Palaihnihan family, related to Hokan) and were traditionally hunter-gatherers, relying on seasonal foraging, fishing, and trade with neighboring groups like the Achumawi (Pit River) and Modoc. Prior to European contact during the California Gold Rush (1849 onward), they bartered furs, hides, meat, seeds, roots, and vegetables for items such as acorns, salmon, dentalia shells, soapstone, and—significantly—basketry caps and tule baskets from other tribes.
