The Black Hills of South Dakota are rich in Native American history and archaeology, particularly associated with tribes like the Lakota Sioux, who consider the area sacred (known as Pahá Sápa). Artifacts such as stone mortars (and often paired with pestles) are grinding tools used by Indigenous peoples for processing foods like seeds, nuts, roots, berries, or medicinal plants.
