A bone flesher is a traditional Indigenous North American tool (also called a bone fleshing tool or defleshing tool) used to scrape flesh, fat, fascia, and membrane from animal hides during hide processing and tanning. merriam-webster.com These tools were commonly made from long bones such as the tibia (shin bone) or metatarsal/cannon bone of large animals like bison, elk, moose, or deer. One end was typically shaped, beveled, or serrated to create an effective scraping edge, while the other could serve as a handle (sometimes wrapped with rawhide, sinew, fabric, or other materials for grip or decoration). Use often produces a distinctive polish or sheen on the bone.
