Mortar and Pestles were historically used for grinding medicines, herbs, acorns, or other materials in traditional healing and daily practices.
These tools date back thousands of years, with evidence from pre-Columbian (pre-1492) periods through early historic times. While larger versions were primarily for food, smaller mortars and pestles were often specifically used for grinding medicinal plants, herbs, minerals, or pigments for body paint and healing preparations. Among groups like the Miwok in California, small portable mortars ground medicines and paints. Lenape (Delaware) examples from the Northeast were small, handheld stone sets suited for medicines rather than large-scale grain grinding.
