Traditional balances constructed from organic fibers and carved wood are historical tools used heavily throughout various global trade networks—including regions across North Africa, West Africa, and pre-industrial parts of Asia and the Americas—prior to the introduction of standardized metallic mechanical scales. They were frequently used to measure lightweight commodities such as medicinal herbs, dried spices, or precious stones.
