Carved bone artifacts from Northern or Central California are primarily associated with Native American cultures, such as the Hupa/Yuork/Karuk of the Northern or the  Yokuts, Miwok, and Ohlone peoples who inhabited the region (including the Central Valley and surrounding areas).

Indigenous groups in California commonly crafted bone into practical and decorative items such as Awls — needles, and fish hooks for sewing, fishing, and tool-making and Ornaments — beads, pendants, and whistles, often from deer, bird, or marine mammal bones.
