Chimayo Early Rio Grande Blanket is a type of traditional woven textile from northern New Mexico, blending Rio Grande weaving traditions with the emerging Chimayo style, particularly from the late 19th to early 20th centuries (roughly 1880sā1920s).
Rio Grande blankets originated in the Spanish colonial period (starting in the 1600s) along the Rio Grande valley in New Mexico. These were weft-faced, striped blankets woven on European-style treadle looms, often longer than wide, using handspun wool from churro sheep introduced by Spanish settlers.
