Mixed site collection of small, portable stone artifacts—effigies, pendants, and mini vessels—often found in Chumash middens or village sites. Many feature pecked, incised, or inlaid designs (geometric like zigzags, or representational like animals/birds), tied to shamanism, cosmology, or daily/ritual life from San Luis Obispo

In Very Good Condition

Chumash artisans frequently worked soft stones like steatite (soapstone), sandstone, or quartzite, creating incised (carved/engraved), pecked, or inlaid designs for functional, decorative, or spiritual purposes.

Left large stone (teardrop/oval shape with hole) is a perforated pendant or charm with an inlaid or painted/incised design resembling two connected or facing figures. The dark inlay (black/brown) contrasts with the stone, common in Chumash pieces where pigments, asphaltum, or shell were used for emphasis.

Central small bowl/cup-like object is a miniature stone mortar or cup, pecked or ground out with a deep hollow. Small basins like this appear in Chumash assemblages, sometimes for pigments (used in rock art) or as personal/ritual containers.

Right elongated stone (tall, with knobbed top) is a pendant or effigy with pecked/incised designs, including what looks like a bird or animal figure (possibly a duck/goose-like form) and zigzag or wavy lines below (common motifs in Chumash art, symbolizing water, snakes, lightning, or celestial patterns).

Curved/horn-shaped piece at bottom is a zoomorphic effigy of a sea mammal (e.g., whale or dolphin tail/fin). Chumash effigies often represent marine animals important to their maritime culture, used as luck charms for hunting/fishing.

Small oval/egg-shaped items (pinkish/white and others) are drilled beads or small pendants, made from shell (olivella or abalone common in Chumash sites). These served as currency, ornaments, or components in necklaces.
