Chumash pestles are stone grinding tools traditionally used by the Chumash people, indigenous to the coastal regions of Southern and Central California (primarily around the Santa Barbara Channel, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo areas). They were paired with stone mortars (or sometimes basket hoppers) for processing foods, especially acorns, nuts, seeds, and other plant materials.
