Chumash pipe fragments and large pestles are common categories of ground-stone and steatite artifacts from the Indigenous Chumash people of the central/southern California coast and Channel Islands (roughly Malibu to Paso Robles and the northern islands). Pestles (and associated mortars) were essential for processing acorns (a dietary staple after leaching tannins), seeds, nuts, roots, and sometimes pigments. They are usually sandstone, basalt, or similar local stone, cylindrical to slightly tapered, and can be quite large—some archaeological examples exceed 50 cm (about 20 inches) and a few approach or surpass three feet.
