Cochiti Pueblo frog pottery is a beloved form of traditional Native American figurative ceramics from Cochiti Pueblo (located about 22 miles southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico). Cochiti potters have long been renowned for their whimsical, detailed animal figurines, with frogs being especially popular alongside storytellers, owls, turtles, and other creatures.
These pieces are typically hand-coiled from local clay, fired outdoors, and painted with natural pigments derived from plants and minerals. They often feature bold black-on-cream designs incorporating traditional motifs like rain clouds, lightning, geometric patterns, bugs (such as flies on the tongue), and raised textures for added character. Many frog figurines have open mouths, expressive faces, and sometimes include "storyteller" elements with baby frogs perched on the body.
