Hand Made Hammer with Nicely Formed Nob and Wear Indent at Mid Body Caused By Spike Driven into Logs

In Very Good Condition

Splitting cedar along the Columbia River is the hand maul (also called a hand hammer or mallet), used to drive wedges into cedar logs and trees. Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) splits cleanly along its straight grain, making it ideal for long planks used in houses, canoes, boxes, and other items. Indigenous peoples of the Columbia River region (ancestors of groups such as the Wishram, Wasco, Yakama, and Chinookan peoples) relied on this property for millennia.
