The Columbia River region (especially the lower Columbia River Valley in Oregon and Washington) is renowned for its rich archaeological record of prehistoric Native American (primarily Chinookan and other Plateau/Northwest Coast peoples) stone artifacts. Indigenous peoples along the river produced thousands of stone tools, sculptures, and art objects over millennia, taking advantage of abundant local materials like basalt, steatite (soapstone), serpentine, and other stones. Stone artifacts survive well compared to wood or bone, providing key insights into their culture.
