Large grooved stone axes (also called full-grooved or 3/4-grooved axes) are prehistoric Native American artifacts common in Arizona. They feature a carved groove around part or all of the tool for hafting (attaching) to a wooden handle with sinew or cordage, used primarily for chopping wood or heavy-duty tasks.
In Arizona, these tools are most associated with later prehistoric cultures rather than the earliest periods.
3/4-groove axes — Predominant in southern and central Arizona, produced by Hohokam and Mogollon peoples starting around AD 450.
Full-groove axes — More typical in northern Arizona and associated with Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) traditions.
